Former Presidents of Nepal Library Association (NLA)

The Nepal Library Association (NLA) has had several notable presidents who have made significant contributions to the advancement of library and information services in Nepal. Here is a brief overview of some of them:

Mr. Murari Binod Pokhrel is a prominent figure in the library community of Nepal. He is the founder president of the Nepal Library Association, where he played a significant role in advancing library services and professional development for librarians across the country. Currently, he serves as the General Secretary of the Kathmandu Valley Public Library Society Board, located in Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu. He is also serving as a Vice Chair of READ Nepal, which is a pioneer institution established more than three decades ago and supporting 70 community libraries in 43 districts of Nepal. Mr. Pokhrel continues to contribute to the growth and modernization of libraries and public resources, fostering access to information and knowledge for the community. Out of the library field, he has been involved in different social sectors as well. He is one of the founding members of Disaster Preparedness Network (DPNet) Nepal that was established almost 3 decades ago and is one of the recognized institutions in the field of disaster management activities in Nepal. He is one of the founders and serves as a secretary in NAHUDA Sewa Nepal. A family has donated 4 ropani land near Lankuri Bhangyang area to NS and building construction for active senior citizens is in progress. Where active senior citizens will live together, they support each other & surrounding community with their knowledge, skill and experiences and finally they like to leave this world with a happy ending. NLA tenure: 1980-1983

Mr. Purna Prasad Amatya is a distinguished figure in the field of library and information science in Nepal. He served as the President of the Nepal Library Association (NLA), where he made significant contributions to the development and modernization of libraries across the country. Under his leadership, the NLA saw various initiatives aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies of library professionals and advocating for better library resources and services. Mr. Amatya’s dedication to the profession has left a lasting impact on the library community in Nepal. His efforts have been instrumental in promoting the importance of libraries as vital centers for knowledge and learning.

NLA tenure: 1983-1986

Mr. Ishwor Raj Pandey is a distinguished figure in the library and information science community in Nepal. He has served as the President of the Nepal Library Association (NLA), contributing significantly to the development and modernization of library services in the country. Under his leadership, the NLA has initiated numerous programs aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies of library professionals and advocating for better library infrastructure and resources. Mr. Pandey’s efforts have played a crucial role in promoting the importance of libraries as vital community resources for education and information access in Nepal.

NLA tenure: 1986-1989

Mr. Saket Bihari Thakur is a distinguished figure in the field of library science in Nepal. As the former president of the Nepal Library Association (NLA), he has significantly contributed to the advancement and modernization of library services across the country. During his tenure, Mr. Thakur focused on promoting the professional development of librarians, enhancing library infrastructures, and advocating for better access to information for all. His leadership has been instrumental in numerous initiatives aimed at integrating technology in libraries, fostering collaborations among library professionals, and elevating the standards of library management and services in Nepal. Mr. Thakur’s dedication and vision continue to inspire the library community, making him a respected and influential leader in the field.

NLA tenure: 1989-1992 & 1992-1997

Mr. Rudra Prasad Dulal is a former Associate Professor at the Central Department of Library and Information Science, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. He has significantly contributed to the field of library and information science through his academic work and research. With extensive experience in library management, information organization, and digital libraries, Professor Dulal has been instrumental in advancing library education in Nepal. His expertise encompasses modern library practices, information technology in libraries, and the development of information systems. Professor Dulal is known for his dedication to fostering a robust academic environment and enhancing the skills and knowledge of future library professionals. In the year 2060/61, approximately 35,000 books from the Nepal National Library and Keshar Library were classified, indexed, and entered into an electronic database. He began his journey as the coordinator of a 35-day training program in Nepal. NLA tenure: 1997-2002

Mr. Bhola Kumar Shrestha has made significant contributions to the development and management of library services in Nepal. With extensive experience in both governmental and educational sectors, he has played a pivotal role in promoting literacy and access to information. His leadership at Dilliraman Kalyani Regmi Library and his tenure as Under Secretary have been marked by his commitment to enhancing library infrastructure and services. As the current Treasurer of Read Nepal, Mr. Shrestha continues to advocate for the advancement of reading culture and resource accessibility in the country. NLA tenure: 2002- 2007 & 2007-2010

Mr. Prakash Kumar Thapa is a distinguished library professional known for his significant contributions to the field of library and information services in Nepal. He formerly served as the Director of the American Library at the US Embassy in Nepal, where he played a pivotal role in enhancing the library’s resources and services. Mr. Thapa is recognized for his efforts in promoting information literacy, advancing digital library initiatives, and fostering cultural and educational exchanges between Nepal and the United States. His leadership and vision have greatly influenced the development of modern library practices in the region. NLA tenure: 2010-2014

Dr. Ashok Thapa is an esteemed Associate Professor at Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur, Nepal. With a distinguished career in academia, Dr. Thapa has made significant contributions to the field of library and information science. His research interests encompass modern library management, digital libraries, and the integration of information technology in library services. Known for his dedication to advancing library education and practices, Dr. Thapa has published numerous research papers and has been actively involved in various professional organizations. His expertise and commitment to excellence make him a respected figure in the academic community. NLA tenure: 2014-2017

Ms. Gita Thapa is the former President of the Nepal Library Association and a seasoned librarian with over 25 years of experience at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Throughout her distinguished career, she has made significant contributions to the development and management of library resources, demonstrating unwavering dedication to promoting library services and fostering professional growth within the library community in Nepal.

NLA tenure: 2017-2019

 

Mr. Indra Prasad Adhikari is the former Chief Librarian of Tribhuvan University Central Library (TUCL) in Nepal. With a distinguished career in library and information science, Mr. Adhikari has significantly contributed to the development and modernization of library services in the country. Under his leadership, TUCL saw numerous advancements in digital resources and information management systems, enhancing accessibility and resource availability for students and researchers. His dedication to the field has earned him recognition as a pioneer in library administration and an advocate for continuous professional development for library professionals in Nepal. NLA tenure: 2019-2024
